Santa Cruz Valley Unified School District students are wheeling their way to good health thanks to Allkidsbike.org. They recently funded new student and teacher bicycles, helmets, curriculum, and maintenance equipment for a bicycle program that was launched in March at Calabasas, Mountain View, and San Cayetano Elementary schools.

District P.E. Coordinator Jessica Kuhm applied to the program in September and in October of the same year, was notified that her project had been fully funded. “Congratulations – your 3 schools are fully funded! Teaching kids to ride a bike means so much to us, but it means even more to the little kiddos who will receive the bikes, helmets, and everything needed to learn to ride,” wrote Bethany Carbajal, School Logistics Specialist for the program.

How the Program Works
The program requires administrative support to implement the program before teachers can apply. That was easy to do according to Mrs. Kuhm, “The principals as well as our SHAC were excited about bringing a cycling program to the kids.” SHAC, the district’s School Health and Wellness Committee is comprised of staff, food services, and community members. Their mission is to foster healthy habits in students, families, and the entire community.

Once administrators were on board, Mrs. Kuhm applied for funding for all three SCV35 elementary schools, a total value of $18,000. Each elementary school received twenty-four bikes, twenty-four helmets, twenty-four pedal conversion kits, one teacher bike, and teacher training and certification.
