Press Release: SCV35 announces 2021 Senior Activities Senior Tribute Parade, Prom and Graduation Plans

GRADUATION

After consideration of current COVID-19 benchmarks, the availability of the vaccine and consultation with the Pima County Community Health Department, students, families and staff, SCVUSD No. 35 administration approved a senior parade and an in-person prom and graduation ceremonies.

Several location options were considered to meet COVID-19 mitigation protocols for large groups. Due to ongoing bond project construction, it was determined the RRHS campus would not be large enough for a traditional ceremony with appropriate social distancing.

Staff proposed three options to seniors, which included a diploma ceremony on RRHS campus, a local high school, and the Kino Sports Complex in Tucson. Nearly 80% of votes reflected Kino Sports Complex as the student and family choice. “We came to the conclusion of hosting our graduation by garnering our student voice. We pride ourselves on being student-centered here at Rio Rico High School, and we are working towards being student-centered in as many things as possible.”

Principal Estrada will host a virtual meeting Monday, April 12th at 5:30 PM to share venue details with families and answer any questions they may have. Information will be shared regarding the number of guests students will be allowed to attend and transportation to the event. The venue confirmed Thursday afternoon the use of the baseball field for the ceremony, which has a seating capacity of 11,000. Due to COVID protocols and restrictions, Kino Sports Complex will allow up to 20% of the stadium’s capacity which is equivalent to 2300 people. Administration will take into consideration changing protocols and staff in attendance to determine a final number of guests per student.

Transportation will be provided for seniors who would like to attend, and there are plans to offer transportation to a small group of guests who may not have transportation to the event.

Graduation will be May 20, 2021 at 7:00 PM at the baseball stadium at Kino Sports Complex. For more information, please visit our YouTube channel for Mr. Estrada’s Graduation Update 2021.

PROM

Prom will be held at Rio Rico High School on April 24, 2021, outside in the RRHS courtyard. This year’s theme is “Masquerade Under the Stars.” Attendance will be limited to 200 students and each student will need to sign the same COVID-19 waiver currently required by students to attend the hybrid program on campus. Seniors will be afforded the opportunity to purchase tickets two days before Juniors, in an effort to prioritize the class attendance.

SENIOR TRIBUTE PARADE

The 2nd Annual Senior Tribute Parade will be held on May 12th at 6:30 pm. RRHS has partnered with La Maxima to D.J. and stream the event. On-air interviews will be conducted with students leading up to the event, and the celebration will end with a fireworks display. More specific information will be provided to the community at a later date.
