FAQ

When you're new to a school, or even when you've been around awhile, you're sure to have questions about the policies and procedures that keep everything running smoothly. Below we've provided information about the district guidelines parents tend to inquire about most often. You can find a more detailed look at all of our policies by reviewing the student handbook for your child's school, which you'll find in the parent quick links on the Home page. In the meantime, here's a brief outline of some things you can expect at Santa Cruz Valley USD.

What is the dress code at SCVUSD schools?

We require our students in grades K - 8 to wear uniforms. Here are the general guidelines:

For grades K-5:

  • Tops: Red or navy blue polo shirt (solid colors, no emblems)
  • Pants, shorts, skirts, or jumpers: Khaki or navy blue

Calabasas School (6-8):

  • Tops: White or gold polo shirt (solid colors, no emblems)
  • Pants, shorts, skorts, skirts, or jumpers: Navy blue
  • Belts: Navy blue, black, or brown required

Coatimundi Middle School:

  • Tops: Red, black, or white polo shirt or collared button blouse (solid colors, no emblems)
  • Pants, shorts, skirts, skorts, and jumpers: Khaki or black
  • Belts: Brown or black required

If you have specific questions about uniforms, please contact your school's secretary.

High school students and students participating in special non-uniform events should also keep in mind the following guidelines when dressing for school:

  • Students may only wear shorts and skirts that have been tailored and hemmed.
  • Students may not wear halter tops, spaghetti straps, or shirts that expose the midriff.
  • Students must wear shoes at all times. When participating in physical activities, students' shoes must have a closed toe.
  • Students' jewelry must not present a safety hazard to self and/or others.
  • Students may not wear clothing or jewelry that contains profane or defamatory writing.
  • Students may not wear, carry, or display bandannas of any color, size, or shape. This also includes simulations of anything representing “colors.”
  • Students may not wear head coverings, with the exception of properly approved occupational safety headgear required for specific classes. The other exception is Western Day, when elementary students may wear head coverings for the day.
  • Students may not wear or carry any items with gang-related personalization, whether on hats, items of clothing, or one's person.
  • Students may not wear clothing or carry items with language or symbols representing drugs, sex, alcohol, or anything obscene.

What can I expect with regard to school transportation?

You can find bus schedules and routes in your child's school office. Please keep in mind that we provide bus transportation as a convenience and a privilege. Students must adhere to all school rules when on our school buses. In addition, students must remain seated at all times while the bus is in motion. The bus driver has the authority to take whatever steps are necessary to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all passengers. If you have any transportation questions, we welcome you to contact our Transportation Department. Students cannot change bus routes without prior approval.

Does my child need immunizations before enrolling in a SCVUSD school?

In accordance with state law, we require our students to receive the appropriate immunizations-and provide proof of immunization-before they may enroll and attend school. On our Health Office page, you will find a parent letter and other immunization documents that provide more details about specific state immunization requirements. You will also find exemption forms for students with religious or medical exemptions to the immunization law.

We encourage you to contact our health office with any concerns or questions you have regarding immunization requirements.

What if my child needs to take medicine while at school?

At SCVUSD, we do not dispense or keep supplies of over-the-counter medications such as acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen, cough drops, throat lozenges, or antacids. We will not give any student medication except upon written request from a licensed physician/healthcare provider who has the responsibility for the medical management of the student. We will only administer medication purchased in the United States and prescribed by an Arizona licensed physician, nurse practitioner, physician's assistant, or dentist. If your child requires prescription or non-prescription medication during school hours, the health office staff will administer the necessary medication only with written and signed parental and physician authorization. Parents/guardians must bring medications in person and must provide medication in the original, properly labeled container.

We require parents to renew parent/physician authorization forms annually.

What is your policy regarding school lunches?

Students will have time each day in which to eat lunch, whether they choose to bring lunch from home or to purchase it. Because we are a closed campus, students may not leave campus during the lunch break.
Sodexo Food Services Corporation prepares our school lunches and provides students with the option of purchasing the daily hot lunch or a la carte items through the snack bar. Students may purchase meals before school or during lunchtime by paying the cafeteria clerk. We expect parents to maintain positive balances in their child's meal account. Students who qualify for free or reduced-priced lunches must reapply each year in order to continue to be eligible. You can obtain an application for free or reduced-price lunches from your child's school secretary.
